NL Song!

I really like this song and think that it is hilarious.  It is a folk song from Newfoundland which I was introduced to in my Atlantic Canadian Folklore class. However, I must now present a....

DISCLAIMER: This song, though hilarious, can be taken as slightly inappropriate. It is called Tom Tobin's Dickybird.  From the name I'm guessing you know why it could be taken as slightly inappropriate so you have been warned.  Watch at your own risk.  Enjoy!

P.S. I even had my mum listen to it to make sure it was not to inappropriate.  She found it amusing.

Halifax - Day 2 and Great Big Sea

Today was day number two in Halifax.  It started off like any other vacation day.  Sleeping in and laying about the hotel room were involved.  When we finally got moving it was about noon.  The plan was to go to the Alexander Keith Brewery and guess what that plan actually worked!  We got there in time for the 2pm tour but it was full so we had to get tickets for the 3pm tour.  Oh no more time to shop.

The tour itself was rather interesting.  They took a historical approach to the endeavor and had three costumed people who guided us through the brewery of yesterday (1820's).  It was different then many tours I have been on.  Toward the end of the tour we entered what appeared to be a replication of Alexander Keith's original tavern.  There we were served our choice of Keith's Ale.  I chose to try the Red Amber Ale and it was surprisingly delicious.  After a little song and games the tour ended with a good time had by all.

Lunch was the next order of business. We ate at the pub located in the brewery.  It was quite delicious and reasonable affordable. After that was handled we were off to a free concert in Celebration Square in honor of the 2011 Canada Games taking place in Halifax.  The opening act, Jeremy Fisher, started at 7 with the main act, Great Big Sea, starting at 8pm.  We got there about 6 and there was already a large crowd.  By the time we left about 8:45pm (the concert was still going) there was rumored to be over 1500 people there and boy would I believe it. Here is an article from a local Halifax newspaper regarding the concert

By the time we got back to our hotel room it was almost 11pm and we were exhausted.  So ended another wonderful day in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  Today should be just as great!

Halifax - Gettin There and Day 1

Maggie and I  made it to Halifax with little problem.  The only slight hick up was the forgotten directions but that was quickly solved by a well timed text to my mum to ask for the directions.  All worked out well.  We got to our hotel, we checked in, we watched some TV, and we went to bed.  Great end to a long day.

Yesterday was our first day in Halifax.  We started off by going out and searching for breakfast.  The convenience store next door was quickly found and food was purchased.  The next step for the day was to figure out the bus system.  The nice lady at the front desk was more than willing to help us out.  We were heading for downtown!!

Two bus rides and a transfer later we made it downtown to Spring Garden Road, which is know for its shopping.  We wondered up and down the street for a couple of hours, stopping in on some interesting looking shops.  A little before lunch time we meet up with Maggie's friend who goes to school in Halifax.  She showed us around the downtown area and the waterfront.  At the end of our brief tour it started to rain profusely (bad Oregon rain day) so we high tailed it back to a pub so we could eat lunch while waiting for the worst of the rain to pass.  I had a hamburger and fries.  It was one of the most delicious hamburgers that I have had in awhile.
The Pub where we ate
After lunch we went on a tour of Dalhousie, the biggest local university.  It is a beautiful campus with many wonderful aspects.  We were then kindly put back on a bus heading in the direction of our hotel.  After the first bus we had to wait about 40min for our next bus to come so we went grocery shopping.  We made it onto our next bus and back to the hotel.  I spent the evening swimming laps, sitting in the hot tub, and watching Firefly.  All in all a good end to a good day.  Today should be even better!

Headin' for Halifax

I am now free!!! Only for a week but that should be enough to recuperate. I am leaving for Halifax tonight and spending one fabulous week there with my bestest Maggie. We will be doing many touristy activities like Citadel Hill, a Historic Brewery, and the Maritime Museum.  Not to mention the shopping!!  For the aforementioned reasons my posting may be short and sporadic this week. I'll update you on my amazing adventure when I can and I hope that everyone has a great week!!

Two for the Price of One

Guess what!!! It's Wednesday! And that means a new video. Well today you are in luck because I bring you not one but TWO videos.  In the States we have a wonderful National Parks system with a wide variety of offerings.  Here in Canada they have something very similar.  The first video is a promo for Parks Canada and the second for a Cape Breton Historical site.  I hope you enjoy!

Oh the Life of a College Student!

Although this is the last week before Reading Week (a.ka. Spring Break minus the spring) there is still much to be done.  I have two papers due on Monday.  One of which is already done and the other is for my Folklore class. I have barely started it but then again it is only Friday.  I also need to create an annotated bibliography for my history class for Monday.  Then there's Tuesday in which I have TWO French midterms.  After that though the week should get a little easier.  Until I have to start work on my history essay!  Oh the work of a college student is never done!

Now that I'm done complaining I must say I am super excited for Reading Week.  Maggie and I are planning on going to Halifax. We shall do the typical tourist things like the historical sites and some museums.  However we are also going to do some fun things.  We're thinking of getting a tour of a brewary, exploring the downtown, and going shopping!  Wish us luck!  If you have any advice feel free to leave a comment. Advice is always welcome. Have a great day!

Tight 'n Bright and Other Exciting Things

How is it Sunday and I have done very little?  For a weekend where I did very little it has flown by.  On Wednesday and Thursday we got hit with another snow storm.  This time it was worse but classes didn't get canceled for the day, just Thursday morning classes.  I am one of the lucky people who has a Thursday morning class so I got to sleep in an extra hour.  I however did have to go to my afternoon class of which only 5 people showed up for.  The average people in that class is 25.

Thursday night was spent with Maggie being girls.  Friday is when things started to get interesting.  Maggie and I went to the mall with some girls to get outfits for Tight 'n Bright, the theme at the Pit that night.  It was a very exciting ordeal to pick out outfits that would display our tightest and brightest.  To learn more about it or to see a picture of my outfit check out Maggie's blog.  Saturday was filled with homework and movies.  That brings us to today where I am hurridly doing homework in the hopes of going to watch the Superbowl.  Wish me luck!
